Education

“We believe in an educational system that will give to our people a knowledge of self. If you do not have knowledge of yourself and your position in society and the world, then you will have little chance to know anything else.” -Black Panther Party, #5 of the 10-point-program

“The native intellectual who wishes to create an authentic work of art must realize that the truths of a nation are in the first place its realities. He must go on until he has found the seething pot out of which the learning of the future will emerge.” -Frantz Fanon, “The Wretched of the Earth”

As articulated by Paulo Freire in Pedagogy of the Oppressed, we seek to guide our communities towards developing a critical consciousness (conscientização) of our collective political, economic, and cultural realities.

Through our art and music, we will present historically informed and culturally relevant events that accurately discuss oppressed communities’ struggles against white supremacy and highlight their resistance methods. These events will be made as accessible to the community as possible and may include hybrid/virtual panel discussions, film screenings, reading clubs, and curated educational programs. By bringing these offerings at little or no cost to public schools, libraries, shelters, and other community organizations, we hope to use art as a tool for consciousness-raising and inspire people to take action in their own communities.

In addition to Freire, we are informed by the strategies of the Black Panther Party’s Liberation Schools and youth education programs; culturally-relevant pedagogy (CRP) as spearheaded by Gloria Ladson Billings and Geneva Gay; and the Venezuelan El Sistema program developed by José Antonio Abreu, among others.
